This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, January 8th, 
2018.



A SANDHILL CRANE continues to be seen near 419 Main Street in Rollinsford, 
and was last reported on January 7th.



A SNOWY OWL was found in Keene on January 2nd. It was last reported at 3 Ash 
Brook Road atop a power-line pole on January 7th.



A SNOWY OWL continues to be seen along Route 1A in Rye, and 1 was seen on 
Four Tree Island in Portsmouth, both on January 6th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen on the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor 
and was last reported on January 6th.



3 ICELAND GULLS were seen at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
January 8th. The treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 
7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be 
out of the plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders 
to leave. Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at 
Pickering Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always 
open during daylight hours.



14 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were seen off of Seabrook Beach on January 7th.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE continues to be seen at Stark Landing on the 
Merrimack River in Manchester, and was last reported on January 8th.



A female BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on the Cocheco River in Dover on 
January 1st and 4th.



A PIED-BILLED GREBE and a female BUFFLEHEAD were seen at Stark Landing on 
the Merrimack River in Manchester on January 3rd.



3 WOOD DUCKS were seen Rochester on January 8th, 1 was seen in Milford on 
the 7th, and 1 was seen in Nashua on the 7th.



A NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen in Milford on January 7th, and a GREEN-WINGED 
TEAL was seen in Rye on the 6th.



8 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 2 DUNLIN, and 3 SANDERLINGS were seen along the coast 
during the past week.



A SNOW BUNTING was seen at Seabrook Beach on January 7th.



2 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in East Washington on January 2nd.



7 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from Sunapee on January 2nd.



An EASTERN PHOEBE was photographed in Henniker on January 6th.



A RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was seen in Newmarket on January 7th.



2 WINTER WRENS and a BELTED KINGFISHER were seen at the Milford Fish 
Hatchery on January 7th.



A GRAY CATBIRD was seen at the Ash Brook wetland in Keene on January 3rd.



3 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen at a birdfeeder in Lyme on January 8th.



An EASTERN TOWHEE continues to be seen at a private residence in Wilton and 
was last reported on January 5th, and 1 was seen in Kingston on the 6th.



An “OREGON” DARK-EYED JUNCO was seen in Errol on January 3rd.



Single FOX SPARROWS were reported from Newport, Brookline, Keene, Exeter, 
Penacook, Westmoreland, Lyme, and Dover during the past week.



A CHIPPING SPARROW, a SWAMP SPARROW, and 2 SAVANNAH SPARROWS were reported 
from scattered locations during the past week.



YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS were seen in Merrimack, Holderness, Hampton, and 
Nottingham during the past week.



There were a few NORTHERN FLICKERS and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS reported 
during the past week.



4 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were seen at a feeder in Etna on January 5th, and 1 
was seen in Hampton on the 6th.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Seabrook on January 6th, and 1 was seen in 
Hanover on the 2nd. A MERLIN was seen in Nashua on the 8th.



A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Rye and 1 was seen in Nottingham, both on 
January 3rd.



7 TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Exeter on January 8th.



Each January the “Twitchers in the Rye” take part in an annual competition 
called the Superbowl of Birding to raise money for two NH Audubon programs –
