Early evening observations for fall nighthawks resumed this week in
the Foley Park area of Norwich, but so far no nighthawks have been
seen. Last year (2009), the earliest fall nighthawks at that location
were two on August 12.
This evening (August 11) 20 bird species were found in the Foley Park
area. The most unexpected bird for that location was a well seen fall-
plumaged Bobolink perched on the brush on the slope of Foley Park next
to the cove. On flying off, it gave the usual call note for that
species.
Bird song of any kind was infrequent this evening. Four species
singing for short periods were Yellow Warbler, American Redstart, Song
Sparrow, and American Goldfinch, all of which were seen.
The most conspicuous species was Eastern Kingbird with as many as 4
perched at times in a single tree. Kingbirds kept flying out from
their perches to catch insects.
Other highlights included at least one Wood Duck, at least one Green
Heron, 4 swifts, a kingfisher, a Veery, two Cedar Waxwings, a Common
Yellowthroat, and three Baltimore Orioles.
