HCC's first birdwalk of the spring produced rather slim pickings this cold gray morning.which kept even most of the birds still abed. Unusually high water on the River (Wilson's Landing almost under water) seemed to discourage the dabblers with only a Wood Duck pair and a Mallard pair at the Landing. Further upstream at Grant Brook we found several Ring Neck pairs along with Mallard and Hooded Merganser pairs. Also seen were Song Sparrows, Phoebes and the omni-present Red Wings. Notably absent were thrushes (other than Robins), warblers, swallows, and even the resident woodpeckers and chickadees. We did, however, find a scenic trail through hemlock forest to rolling upland meadows by bearing left over a new footbridge after the loop trail crosses Grant Brook heading south.
