I’m happy to corroborate Adam’s Merlin sightings (not that his expertise was ever in doubt!) At around 12:30 today I saw one Merlin flying up to a perch in one of the tall trees on the golf course next to Lyme Rd. At around 4:00 I saw another (or the same??) Merlin swoop low over the Connecticut heading up to the woods above the cemetery between Tuck Drive and Wheelock St. My sense is that these are distinct individuals (and distinct pairs), as last year I had consistent sightings in the same two patches of forest (northern end of golf course and the cemetery).

There has been a small (~20-30 individuals) mixed flock of Cedars and Bohemians foraging on Reservoir Road near the rugby fields for the past two days. I’m cherishing each sighting; with the early spring I worry each Bohemian I see will be the last until next winter.

Best,

Peter Geithner

A few minutes ago, along Webster Avenue on the Dartmouth campus, I saw one Merlin and heard another calling from nearby. This pair of merlins seems to hang out around the conifers between Webster Avenue and the Tuck School, and presumably nests there. I’m not sure whether this is the same pair that has nested on the golf course in years past, but these birds seem to range widely, particularly in early spring: I’ve seen Merlins around all corners of campus in past years. If you’re in Hanover, look up, and keep an ear out for their repetitive, shrieking calls.
