This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, May 14th, 
2014.



2 CASPIAN TERNS, and an AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER were seen along the coast in 
Hampton on May 11th.



A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen in Newmarket on May 11th.



A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at a private residence in Newmarket on 
April 28th and 29th, and again on May 3rd, 4th, and 5th. It was last 
reported on the 10th and may have left the area. The dead tree that this 
bird is frequenting is located on the Great Bay side of Bay Road about 150 
yards to the south and east of Barberry Coast Road in Newmarket.



A SUMMER TANAGER was seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on May 10th.



A DICKCISSEL was heard at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on May 11th.



An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was reported from Mine Falls Park in Nashua on May 
12th.



A CERULEAN WARBLER was seen in Hampton on May 7th.



A BREWSTER’S WARBLER was seen off of Iron Works Road in Concord on May 11th.



There was an unconfirmed report of a LEAST BITTERN at Mine Falls Park in 
Nashua on May 11th, and a number of AMERICAN BITTERNS were reported from 
various locations during the past week.



A PIED-BILLED GREBE was seen at Horseshoe in Concord on May 9th.



2 ROSEATE TERNS were seen in Hampton Harbor on May 10th.



A RED-THROATED LOON, 7 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, a HORNED GREBE, and 4 BONAPARTE’S 
GULLS were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on May 10th.



23 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were seen on the Connecticut River in Hanover on May 
10th.



A COMMON TERN was seen along Route 4 in Durham, and a COMMON TERN and a 
BONAPARTE’S GULL were seen at Berry Bay in Freedom, all on May 11th.



A BONAPARTE’S GULL and 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were seen at Cherry Pond in the 
Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on May 10th.



A GREAT CORMORANT was seen at Rye Ledge on May 12th.



40 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Ragged Neck in Rye on May 12th, and 90 
were seen at Seabrook Beach on the 10th.



3 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were reported from the Pease International Tradeport on 
May 10th and 12th.



A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen in Hampton Marsh on May 12th.



A GREAT EGRET was seen at Powder House Pond in Exeter on May 9th.



A FISH CROW was seen at Bicentennial Park in Hampton on May 10th.



A male PURPLE MARTIN was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant, and 
3 were seen in Seabrook, all on May 10th.



A lingering AMERICAN TREE SPARROW was seen in Center Harbor on May 9th.



2 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen in Walpole on May 8th.



3 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Richmond on May 13th, 1 was seen in Lyman 
on the 12th, and 1 was seen in Rumney on the 11th



A male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen at Little Cherry Pond in the 
Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on May 10th.



A pair of MERLINS was seen in Keene on May 12th, and a pair was seen at 
Squam Lake on the 14th.



A LESSER SCAUP was seen at Dodge Pond in Lyman on May 13th.



A RUDDY TURNSTONE was seen at Great Island Common in New Castle on May 12th.



There were a number of inland sightings of shorebirds during the past week 
including LESSER YELLOWLEGS, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, SOLITARY SANDPIPERS, 
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, and LEAST SANDPIPERS



Many spring migrants have been arriving during the past week including 
SCARLET TANAGER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, YELLOW THROATED VIREO, 
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, 
SWAINSON’S THRUSH, WOOD THRUSH, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, 
TENNESSEE WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, WILSON’S WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, 
INDIGO BUNTING, LINCOLN’E SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, ORCHARD ORIOLE, 
and WHIP-POOR-WILLS.



25 TURKEY VULTURES were seen roosting together in trees in Nashua on May 
8th.



NH Audubon’s Birdathon/Bloomathon FUNd Raising Event will be held on May 
17-18.

birds and/or blooming wildflowers as possible within a single day. All funds 
raised will be split 50/50 between NH Audubon and the Chapter, Center, or 
area of your team’s choice (raptor observatories, animal care or education,
