This is New Hampshire Audubon’s Rare Bird Alert for Tuesday, November 5th,
2013.
A male CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD has been seen and photographed visiting
hummingbird birdfeeders at a private residence in Manchester since October
6th. It was most recently reported on November 5th.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen in Sutton on November 2nd and reported again on
the 3rd.
A CATTLE EGRET was seen migrating south in Rye on November 3rd.
2 adult male EURASIAN WIGEONS were seen in the southeast corner of Great Bay
on November 3rd.
A GREATER WHITE FRONTED GOOSE continues to be seen with CANADA GEESE on Main
Street just below the 12th Street bridge in Berlin and was most recently
reported on October 30th.
3 GOLDEN EAGLES were seen from atop Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on
November 3rd, and 1 was seen there on the 2nd. A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen from
Powder Mill Pond in Hancock on November 1st.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen in Dover on October 30th.
An ICELAND GULL was seen at Rockingham Park in Salem on November 4th, and
one was seen on the Connecticut River near Hanover on the 5th.
2 LAUGHING GULLS were seen along the coast on November 3rd.
5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen along the coast on November 3rd.
There were numerous reports of SNOW BUNTINGS during the past week, including
220 at Hampton Beach State Park on November 3rd, and 12 on the upper slopes
of Mount Lafayette on November 2nd.
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen on Dublin Lake on November 1st.
2 LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER were seen on Indian Pond
in Orford on November 3rd.
Over 30 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on Granite Lake in Munsonville on November
3rd, and over 50 BLACK SCOTERS were seen on the Connecticut River in Hanover
on November 3rd.
6 RUDDY DUCKS were seen on Otter Lake in Greenfield on November 1st.
3 AMERICAN COOTS were seen on Eel Pond in Rye on November 3rd.
4 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen in Hampton Marsh on November 2nd.
A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was reported from Pack Monadnock in Peterborough on
October 30th, and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS and a DUNLIN were seen on the
Connecticut River in Hanover on November 5th.
A group of bird watchers counted 94 species of birds in Concord on November
2nd and 3rd. Highlights included: a NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 GREATER SCAUP, 9
BLACK SCOTERS, a SURF SCOTER, a LONG-TAILED DUCK, a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER,
a KILLDEER, 3 AMERICAN WOODCOCKS, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, an EASTERN
PHOEBE, 10 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 6 HERMIT THRUSHES, 170 AMERICAN PIPITS, a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, a PINE WARBLER, a PRAIRIE WARBLER,
7 PALM WARBLERS, an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, a LINCOLN’S SPARROW, 3
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, 2 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, and over 60 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS.
RAPTOR migration is under way with over 10,400 migrating raptors reported
from the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough, and
over 11,000 reported from the Carter Hill Observatory in Concord, all since
September 1st. Be sure to visit these New Hampshire Audubon sponsored
observatories this fall season to help out with the count!
