Today two Spotted Sandpipers were foraging at the same time on
separate floating mats of lily pads south of Foley Park near the
Ledyard Bridge.

A pair of Wood Ducks was seen from Foley Park, and a female Wood Duck
was at Pompy.

Numerous Mallards were diving today in the relatively high water level
at Pompy, and, shortly thereafter, six of those Mallards were preening
while perched along a fallen tree trunk suspended over the water by
the shoreline. Thanks to Doug Hardy for pointing out that observations
of diving Mallards in the Upper Valley go back to at least September
2004, as reported by Doug and Spencer in the UVB archives for that
month. Thanks also to Jim Block, who has reported seeing diving by
Mallards on Lake Sunapee.

Along Campbell Flats Road today, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, a
Northern Flicker, a Red-eyed Vireo, a Chestnut-sided Warbler, a
Scarlet Tanager, and a singing Swamp Sparrow were particularly notable.

A molting male Rose-breasted Grosbeak was in the backyard today here
in Norwich village.

George
