This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for July 21, 2008 covering the period
July 14 - 20, 2008.  

 

The highlight of the week was the discovery by the Vermont Center for
Ecostudies of a bird that appears to be a hybrid of a BICKNELL'S THRUSH and
a VEERY on Stratton Mountain.
 
The Vermont Loon Recovery Project reports that the current Vermont COMMON
LOON count is 62 nesting attempts, tying the record set last year.  Three of
these nesting pairs are new and two pairs that have not nested in years had
chicks.  Lake Dunmore had a chick hatch out 7/12 for the second time in 80
to 100 years.  A total of 11 chicks have been lost so far this nesting
season, one of which was likely taken by a mature bald eagle.  The official
Vermont Loon Count took place on 7/12 and the results will be posted in the
Vermont RBA when known.
 
A GREAT EGRET was seen at Dead Creek on 7/16 and at Delta Park in Colchester
on 7/20.  A juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was observed in Hartland on
7/17.
 
The Raptor Recovery Program of the National Wildlife Federation reports the
PEREGRINE FALCON is doing very well in Vermont.  There are at least 36 pairs
(a new record), at least 25 of which have nested successfully.   At least 44
chicks had hatched at the last count.  It is expected that the nesting
success rate and chick count will likely increase over the next month or so.
 
One GREATER YELLOWLEGS was spotted in South Hero on 7/20 and a LEAST
SANDPIPER was seen in West Swanton on 7/20.
 
A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen in Aitken State Forest on 7/20.
