I am just back from a remote lake in NY close to the Vt border. There
was an adult loon and a young one that was about 2/3 of the adult size.
The adult was the grayest, as opposed to black, loon I have ever seen.

I watched both surface, the adult with a fish that it fed to the
juvenile. I also watched the young one, as large as it was, being
carried on the adult's back. What was really odd to me was the way it
was carried. The juvenile appeared to be lying on it's back with at
least one foot in the air. The juvenile head was lying along the tail
feathers of the adult. It looked like the adult had a head on either
end, though the back one was facing the sky, and a foot coming out of
it's back. It was so odd looking.. A few times the adult spread it's
wings wide and the young one completely disappeared under the wings. I
was amazed that this sized youngster could be so completely covered
under the adult's wings.
