Dear Mr. McCormack,
I am a new resident of Windsor, a retiree who was greatly attracted to this area for its many great features for seniors, in particular. Its beauty, convenience, proximity to DHMC, proximity to all the activities which the Dartmouth and Upper Valley offer, its community culture and safety, were all attractionsand have already proven themselves to be wonderful resources. I quickly joined the Upper Valley birding groups and enjoy frequent walks in nature and contact with wildlife.
I was very concerned to hear that the proposals for the state land held by the Windsor Correctional Facilities did not include "wildlife management"--that is, conservation of the areaspecifically for the preservation and enhancement of wildlife habitat. The proposals were instead oriented towards agriculture and trail development for "active" recreation. I understandthe immediate financial draw of this type of approach; however, those uses would partially destroy this land as wildlife habitat. Those uses are not in keeping with the kindof unspoiled environment I and many others value.
The rich natural environment which this land significantly contributes to in the Windsor area, is not only important to birders, hikers, photographers, other naturalists-- and, of course, to the birds and other animals who depend on this land--it is also a potential source of attraction to the growing group of new retirees, the "Baby Boomers" who have been, and willcontinue to be, drawn to Vermont for the very features which have attracted me, indicated above. We "Baby Boomers" are a politically active group and very inspired by, and concerned with, conservation. Perhaps an idea for the financial future of this area is to publicize such area attractions to new retirees? I think there is a great future here for retired folk--and a beautiful, unspoiled natural environment will be an essential part of that. Let's not throw away our capital for immediate gain. Let's keep this area as beautiful and as special as it is!
Thank you,
Cecelia A. Blair39 Maxwell Perkins LaneWindsor, VT 05089
