This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, May 13th,
2009.
2 MISSISSIPPI KITES have been located in Newmarket near the same 2 sites
where they nested in 2008. One was seen near South Main Street and one was
seen from Gonet Road. These birds are both in residential areas and if you
look for them please remember to respect property rights and individual
privacy. Gonet Road may be the easier site to look for them, as this is a
dead-end road. In either case, please don't park illegally or block traffic.
A MARBLED GODWIT was seen in Hampton Harbor on May 11th, but has not been
reported again. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on May 8th.
A BLACK TERN was seen at Airport Marsh near the Whitefield Airport on May
9th.
A male CERULEAN WARBLER was seen at Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham on
May 10th.
A LAWRENCE'S WARBLER continues to be seen on the edge of a field in the
Lamprey River Preserve off of Packers Falls Road in Durham and was last
reported on May 10th. A LAWRENCE'S WARBLER was also reported from Hampton on
May 10th.
A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was seen with 6 GREEN-WINGED TEAL in Hampton
Harbor on May 8th. A pair of NORTHERN PINTAILS was seen in Airport Marsh in
Whitefield on May 8th.
A LITTLE BLUE HERON was reported from Hollis on May 9th.
There was an unconfirmed sighting of a LEAST BITTERN from the Exeter
Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 9th. 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS were seen near
Surry Lake on May 8th.
A SORA was reported from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on May 9th.
ORCHARD ORIOLES were reported from Durham, Portsmouth, East Kingston, Dover,
Rye, Exeter, and Hinsdale during the past week.
4 AMERICAN PIPITS were seen near the summit of Mount Washington on May 10th.
A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen near Little Cherry Pond at the
Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson on May 9th. 2 BOREAL CHICKADEES
were seen on Jefferson Notch Road on May 10th.
A pair of EVENING GROSBEAKS was reported from Henniker, and 2 were reported
from Pawtuckaway State Park, all on May 9th.
A MERLIN nest was reported from Sandwich on May 7th.
2 PIPING PLOVERS were seen on Hampton Beach on May 9th.
Shorebird migration is continuing with LEAST SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, GREATER and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER, DUNLIN, SANDERLING, KILLDEER, and WILLET all being reported
during the past week.
Other arriving migrants reported during the past week included: BANK
SWALLOW, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, WILLOW FLYCATCHER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, MAGNOLIA
WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, CHIMNEY SWIFT, COMMON NIGHTHAWK,
LINCOLN'S SPARROW, and SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW.
A SANDHILL CRANE has returned to Monroe, where it has spent the breeding
season for the last 10+ years running. It spends most of the day among the
cows on the left side of Plains Road in the first fields that you come to.
Sometimes it is found on the Vermont side of the river. It has not been
reported recently.
