This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, October 15th, 
2018.



An adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the Great Bay National Wildlife 
Refuge in Newington on October 14th, but it is not located in an area that 
is open to the public. A juvenile RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at a 
private residence in Keene, also on the 14th.



An immature male YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at the Birch Street 
Gardens in Concord on October 15th.



A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in Bradford on October 12th.



A DICKCISSEL continues to be seen at the Birch Street gardens in Concord and 
was last reported on October 14th. Also present here on the 13th was a 
lingering BOBOLINK.



A DICKCISSEL continues to be seen at Woodmont Orchard in Hollis and was last 
reported on October 13th.



There was an unconfirmed report of a LECONTE’S SPARROW in a field at the 
Brookside Farm in Jackson on October 13th.



A REDHEAD was seen on Eel Pond in Rye on October 14th.



A BRANT was seen at the Lebanon Airport on October 7th, and was last 
reported on the 10th. A SNOW GOOSE was seen in Hampton Marsh on the 13th.



3 NORTHERN PINTAILS were seen migrating over Woodmont Orchard in Hollis on 
October 8th, and a LESSER SCAUP was seen in Rochester on the 10th.



A LAUGHING GULL was seen off the coast in Rye on October 12th and 13th, and 
a RED-THROATED LOON was seen along the coast on the 12th.



4 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were seen on Canobie Lake in Salem on October 15th.



A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen in a flooded section of a field at Peachblow 
Farm in Charlestown on October 14th. Also present were several PECTORAL 
SANDPIPERS.



A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, a DUNLIN, and 9 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were reported 
from the Copps Pond Wildlife Management Area in Tuftonboro on October 14th.



A DUNLIN and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen in Lancaster on October 14th.



A flock of 15 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS was seen at the fields off of Locke Road 
in Concord, and a flock of 8 was seen at Little Cherry Pond in Jefferson, 
all on October 14th.



A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen at Pickering Ponds in Rochester on October 
13th.



7 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from the summit of Pack Monadnock in 
Peterborough on October 10th.



2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were seen at Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on 
October 13th, 1 was seen in Gorham on the 15th, and 1 was seen at NH Audubon’s 
Dahl Sanctuary in North Conway on the 12th.



Lingering migrant warblers reported during the past included: 
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, NASHVILLE WARBLERS, AMERICAN REDSTARTS, NORTHERN 
PARULAS, a YELLOW WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, CAPE MAY 
WARBLERS, BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS, TENNESSEE WARBLERS, a PRAIRIE WARBLER, and 
a WILSON’S WARBLER.



A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was seen near the Dillant-Hopkins airport in Swanzey 
on October 14th, 1 was seen at the Fort Hill WMA in Stratford on the 14th, 1 
was seen in Lancaster on the 14th, and 1 was seen near Wallis Sands in Rye 
on the 13th.



A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen in Conway, and 1 was seen in Sandwich, both 
during the past week.



Other late-migrants of note during the past week included: a CHIMNEY SWIFT, 
a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, a SWAINSON’S THRUSH, a WOOD THRUSH, an EASTERN 
WOOD-PEWEE, a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, a HOUSE WREN, an INDIGO BUNTING, 
several RED-EYED VIREOS, and a few ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS and SCARLET 
TANAGERS.



Small flocks of AMERICAN PIPITS were reported from farm field habitats in 
scattered locations during the past week.



A flock of 20 PINE SISKINS was seen in Plainfield on October 15th, and 5 
EVENING GROSSBEAKS were seen in Lyme on the 14th.



RAPTOR migration is under way with migrating raptors being counted daily at 
the Pack Monadnock Raptor Migration Observatory in Peterborough. Pack 
Monadnock has tallied over 8,300 raptors since September 1st. The majority 
of the raptors that have been seen so far this season were BROAD-WINGED 
HAWKS, but over 145 BALD EAGLES have also been seen. Be sure to visit the 
observatory this fall season to help out with the count!
