This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 28th,
2016. 

A pair of SANDHILL CRANES has returned to Monroe and was reported several
times during the past week. The birds are most often seen in farm fields
along Plains Road. If you look for the birds, please look from the road and
do not enter the fields.

A VARIED THRUSH was discovered visiting a birdfeeder at a private residence
in Merrimack on March 3rd, and was seen numerous times after that. It was
last reported on the 23rd. 

A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Pickering Ponds near the wastewater treatment
plant in Rochester on March 24th, 25th, and 26th.

A SNOWY OWL was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on March 27th. When viewing a
Snowy Owl please do not disturb the bird by approaching too closely, and

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Conway on March 25th.

A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen on the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor
and was last reported on March 27th.

3 RAZORBILLS were seen on the coast on March 26th.

A flock of 92 SNOW GEESE was seen migrating north in Westmoreland on March
23rd, and a flock of 44 was seen in Conway on the 25th. 

A EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 3 NORTHERN SHOVELERS, a GADWALL, and 4
AMERICAN WIGEON were seen on Meadow Pond in Hampton on March 26th. A pair
of NORTHERN PINTAILS was seen at Chapman’s Landing in Stratham on the 27th.

4 pairs of LONG-TAILED DUCKS and a pair of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were
seen on the Connecticut River in Lebanon on March 25th. A RED-BREASTED
MERGANSER was seen flying over Charlestown on the 27th, and 3 BLACK SCOTERS
were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on the 26th.

A GADWALL was reported from North Conway on March 25th.

An AMERICAN WIGEON was seen in Monroe on March 25th, 1 was seen in Lyme on
the 23rd, and 6 were seen in Charlestown on the 24th. 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS
were seen in Charlestown on the 22nd.

BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included: a flock of 300 in
North Conway on March 25th, a flock of 80 in Sunapee on the 28th, a flock
of 30 in Lyme on the 22nd, a flock of 65 in Bartlett on the 25th, a flock
of 50 in Bristol on the 28th, 12 in Concord on the 24th, and several in
Etna on the 25th.

5 EVENING GROSBEAKS were seen in Gilsum on March 23rd.

15 SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Shelburne on March 22nd.

55 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at the mouth of Hampton Harbor on March 27th.

A GREAT EGRET was seen in Rye on March 23rd.

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen in Merrimack on March 24th.

Returning spring migrants reported during the past week included: COMMON
LOON, OSPREY, TREE SWALLOW, CHIPPING SPARROW, FISH CROW, KILLDEER, AMERICAN
WOODCOCK, WILSON’S SNIPE, EASTERN PHOEBE, GREAT BLUE HERON, TURKEY VULTURE,
FOX SPARROW, EASTERN MEADOWLARK, RUSTY BLACKBIRD and YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER. Returning raptors have included AMERICAN KESTREL, MERLIN,
PEREGRINE FALCON, RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, and NORTHERN HARRIER.
