This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, January 20th,
2010.
A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen on the south side of Great Boar's Head in
Hampton on January 20th.
7 RAZORBILLS, 3 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, and 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were seen
along the coast on January 16th.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the Joslin Road gravel pit in Surry on January
18th.
Over 15 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen behind the high school in Gorham on
January 16th.
2 ICELAND GULLS, 2 AMERICAN PIPITS and a female NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen
at the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on January 15th. The treatment
plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on weekdays. If you
visit, please check in at the office and be out of the plant by 2:45 so that
plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave. Do not drive on the
dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering Ponds, located east
of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during daylight hours.
An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Derry Wastewater Treatment Plant on January
20th. The plant is closed Sunday and Monday and if you visit, please check
in at the office.
A GLAUCOUS GULL was again seen in the vicinity of the Yankee Fisherman's
Coop in Seabrook on January 16th.
A gray-morph EASTERN SCREECH-OWL has been seen regularly along Route 1A in
Rye, roosting in a tree about 100-yards north of the entrance to Odiorne
Point State Park, and was last reported on January 20th.
2 pairs of GADWALLS were seen in South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on January
20th.
2 WOOD DUCKS, 19 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 90 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 12 HOODED
MERGANSERS, 4 COMMON MERGANSERS, 3 BALD EAGLES, 2 RING-BILLED GULLS, 2
HERRING GULLS, a BELTED KINGFISHER, a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, and 8 SNOW
BUNTINGS were seen at Lake Wantastiquet on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale
on January 17th.
42 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen in the fields along Krif Road in Keene on January
16th.
A "SOOTY" FOX SPARROW, a subspecies normally occurring near the Pacific
coast, is being regularly seen at a private home in Barrington, and was last
reported on January16th.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Portsmouth and one was seen in Concord, both
on January 20th. A PEREGRINE FALCON was also seen in Manchester on the 14th.
A MERLIN was seen in Nashua, and an AMERICAN KESTREL was seen in Plaistow,
both on January 17th.
6 BALD EAGLES were seen scavenging a deer carcass at the Connecticut River
near Lyme on January 18th.
A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen off of Packers Falls Road in Durham on January
19th.
A TURKEY VULTURE, a NORTHERN HARRIER, and 200 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were
reported from Nashua on January 17th.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen in Nashua on January 15th.
There have been numerous reports of AMERICAN ROBINS and CEDAR WAXWINGS
during the past week. These birds are most often seen foraging for fruit in
trees or on the ground.
