Driving slowly down a dirt road near Springfield, we heard a group of
noisy crows and couldn't resist investigating. They were clearly upset
about something which they were mobbing high in a pine. Somehow their
tone was more serious or urgent than when they mob owls, and sure
enough... it was a fisher.
Fascinating to watch how agilely the fisher moved about the tree, and
also how 5-10 crows joined together for their common good. Even a Blue
Jay join the fray. We speculate that they were defending eggs or
nestlings, and evidently it worked, for the fisher went away and the
group disbanded.
Highlights among our bird sightings were numerous Brown Thrashers,
copulating Kestrels, great looks at a Prairie Warbler, and a Savannah
Sparrow carrying food. At one point, thrashers and a mockingbird were
singing together, creating a chorus not unlike being in an aviary.
