Today Ed Hack and I visited several locations in southeastern Windsor
County, VT, to look for birds. Away from the Connecticut River, many
ponds had at least a partial cover of thin ice. Some avian highlights
follow.

Canada Geese -- about 400 still present in the Connecticut River by
Springfield Meadows in Springfield, VT.
American Black Duck -- small numbers at Lake Runnemede in Windsor and
at Springfield Meadows.
Mallard -- dozens in the river at Springfield Meadows and a small
number at Lake Runnemede.
Bufflehead -- a female in VT waters at Hoyt's Landing in Springfield.
Common Goldeneye -- at a few locations along the Connecticut River
with 16 individuals seen from Old Connecticut River Road at
Springfield Meadows.
Hooded Merganser -- widespread, including dozens at Lake Pinneo in
Quechee and a small number at Hoyt's Landing.
Common Merganser -- dozens at Lake Pinneo; smaller numbers at Lake
Runnemede and Hoyt's Landing.
American Crow -- over 200 present in late morning at Springfield
Meadows.
American Tree Sparrow -- present at Lake Runnemede and Springfield
Meadows.
Savannah Sparrow -- one seen at Lake Runnemede.
Song Sparrow -- two seen at Lake Runnemede.
