This morning (March 17) Ed Hack and I found 30 species of birds in
Norwich along the Connecticut River valley from Foley Park north into
the Pompy area. Canada Geese (roughly totaling 41 individuals),
Mallards (total about 21), Common Goldeneyes (total about 9), Hooded
Mergansers (total about 20), and Common Mergansers (total about 18)
were present at scattered locations along our route. Pairs of American
Black Ducks, our first sightings for the year of that species in
Norwich, were found at two sites. Five Wood Ducks were along the river
on the Vermont side south of Pompy. Two Killdeer and a Turkey Vulture
at Pompy provided our first sightings of the year in Norwich for those
two species. Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles appear to be
increasingly widespread along the river as the season progresses.
Three additional species were seen today in the backyard in the
village section of Norwich: a White-throated Sparrow, 10 Brown-headed
Cowbirds, and a pair of House Finches.
