This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for December 31, 2007 covering the
period December 24 - 31, 2007.

 

Highlights this week include 5 MUTE SWANS off Grand Isle 12/25 and 12/26, an
OSPREY at the Charlotte Ferry Landing on 12/25, a late report of an immature
GOLDEN EAGLE flying south over Lake Champlain in Orwell on 12/22, two LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS at the Charlotte Ferry Landing on 12/25, a YELLOW-BELLIED
SAPSUCKER in West Brattleboro on 12/30, a PINE WARBLER in Middlebury on
12/24 and 12/27, two HOARY REDPOLLS in Waitsfield on 12/24 and 1 in Norwich
12/26, and three SAVANNAH SPARROWS in Addison on 12/30.

 

A SNOW GOOSE was spotted on Lake Champlain in Burlington on 12/29.  A WOOD
DUCK was seen on the Ottauquechee River on 12/28 during the Woodstock CBC.
One RING-NECKED DUCK was observed off Grand Isle on 12/26 and two on 12/29.
Six RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS were seen off Grand Isle on 12/26.

 

A MERLIN was sighted in Addison on 12/30.

 

An AMERICAN COOT was spotted in Shelburne Bay on 12/28.

 

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in West Brattleboro on 12/30 and a
NORTHERN FLICKER was observed in Addison on 12/30.

 

There were a handful of BOHEMIAN WAXWING and CEDAR WAXWING sightings this
week, with 132 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS seen on the Woodstock CBC.  

 

Three SAVANNAH SPARROWS were sighted in Addison on 12/30.

 

Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were observed at Button Bay on 12/26.

 

Large numbers of PINE GROSBEAKS and COMMON REDPOLLS continue to be seen
throughout the state, with flocks of 50 to 80 COMMON REDPOLLS fairly common.
On 12/24 two HOARY REDPOLLS were spotted in Waitsfield; one was seen on the
26th in Norwich.
