This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for May 26, 2008 covering the period May
19 - 26, 2008.  (* = first of year sightings)

 

The highlights of the week include 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS* seen at
Charcoal Creek, just west of the Mississquoi NWR on 5/20, and an unconfirmed
SWAINSON'S WARBLER*, rarely seen this far north, reported from Mississquoi
NWR.

 

A LEAST BITTERN* was seen at West Rutland Marsh on 5/25.

 

Three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen on Caspian Lake on 5/23. 

 

Twenty-four SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were observed Herrick's Cove on 5/18, 43 at
Charcoal Creek on 5/20 and one in Greensboro on 5/24.  Forty SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS were seen in Grand Isle, the first report of the year.  Three
hundred LEAST SANDPIPERS were found at Herrick's Cove on 5/18.  Four DUNLINS
were observed at Charcoal Creek on 5/20.

 

A COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen in Thetford on 5/21. A WHIP-POOR-WILL was seen
and heard in Brandon on 5/25.

 

There was a report of a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Sunderland on 5/23.

 

OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS* returned to Berlin Pond (5/21), Putney (5/22) and
South Starksboro (5/24).

 

A FISH CROW was observed at Red Rocks Park on 5/18.

 

BICKNELL'S THRUSHES* were seen on Pico Peak (1 on 5/19) and Stratton (3 on
5/21).

 

First seasonal sightings of several warblers took place this week:
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER* -- Pownal (2 on 5/23), South Starksboro (2 on 5/24)
and Greensboro (1 on 5/25); CERULEAN WARBLER* - Middlebury (1 on 5/18),
Snake Mt. (5/26) and WILSON'S WARBLER* - Mt. Independence (5/24) and
Hinesburg (5/25).

 

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW* was spotted in South Royalton on 5/22.  A
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen at the Franklin County Airport in Highgate on
5/23 and a lingering FOX SPARROW was observed in Richmond on 5/23 and 5/24.

 

The first ORCHARD ORIOLE* of the spring was seen at Dead Creek on 5/19.
