This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, February 
23rd, 2011.



A SPOTTED TOWHEE has been visiting a birdfeeder at a private residence in 
Peterborough for more than one-month, and was last reported on February 
18th.



A TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was reported feeding in fruit trees and in nearby 
treetops near the town library in Strafford on February 11th. The bird has 
been seen and photographed on several days since then and was last reported 
on the 22nd. To try to see this bird, it is recommended that you stay in 
your car and view the fruit trees from a distance. 75 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were 
seen in the same area on the 18th, and small flocks of COMMON REDPOLLS have 
been seen repeatedly during the past week. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE that was 
being seen in Bow earlier this winter has not been reported for some time, 
despite attempts to relocate it.



A BLACK VULTURE and 12 TURKEY VULTURES were seen in Newmarket on February 
18th.



A male BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was reported from near Seal Rocks in Rye on 
February 20th.



A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was reported from Great Boar's Head in Hampton on 
February 23rd.



A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on February 23rd.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was reported from New Durham on February 23rd, one was 
seen in Keene on the 21st, and one was seen in Marlborough on the 20th.



There were several reports of HOARY REDPOLLS during the past week, including 
one in Strafford on February 22nd, one in Webster on the 18th, and 3 in 
Strafford on the 17th.



COMMON REDPOLLS were reported from numerous locations during the past week. 
Highlights included 200 in Etna, 162 in New Durham, 100 in Strafford, 100 in 
Chatham, 70 in Webster, 70 in Bow, 50 in Marlborough, 30 in Exeter, 25 in 
Hancock, 22 in Epping, 21 in Derry, 21 in Merrimack, and 20 in Auburn.



A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen in Rye on February 20th, and one was seen 
in Lee on the 17th.

Highlights of BOHEMIAN WAXWING flock sightings during the past week included 
300 in New London, 150 in Plymouth, 80 in Campton, and 25 in Wolfeboro.



A flock of 136 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen in Walpole on February 19th.



A female NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen at the South Mill Pond in Portsmouth on 
February 18th.



A female WOOD DUCK was seen on Hall Street, and a COMMON LOON was seen on 
the Merrimack River, both in Bow on February 20th.



2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen in Manchester on February 21st, 2 were 
reported from Nashua on the 19th, and one was reported from Rumney on the 
17th.



A MERLIN was seen in Nashua on the 20th.



A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen in Hampton Harbor on February 20th.



9 GREAT CORMORANTS were seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester on 
February 22nd.



There were several reports of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 
TURKEY VULTURES, and RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS during the past week.
