A few minutes ago, along Webster Avenue on the Dartmouth campus, I saw one Merlin and heard another calling from nearby. This pair of merlins seems to hang out around the conifers between Webster Avenue and the Tuck School, and presumably nests there. I’m not sure whether this is the same pair that has nested on the golf course in years past, but these birds seem to range widely, particularly in early spring: I’ve seen Merlins around all corners of campus in past years. If you’re in Hanover, look up, and keep an ear out for their repetitive, shrieking calls.
