To our surprise this morning, among a large flock of Amer Goldfinch and Pine Siskins, was a bird that looked like an European Goldfinch--almost.

It had a whitish breast, had a strong cardinal-red 'beard' through its chin and up to its eyes and beak--apparently edged in black--and had a beautiful golden yellow wingbar with black in the wings too. The top of the head and back were whitish and did not have the characteristic red and black at the forehead and back of the head.

We tried to take photos and watched it for several minutes come and go with the flock--but didn't see it return.

It was at our feeder line on River Road in Lyme, 1/2 mile south of East Thetford.

Ann and Hal
