We stopped in at Pompy (where Ompompanoosuc & Connecticut Rivers join;
jct. routes 132 and 5) this afternoon, hoping for Nighthawks and wishing
for shorebirds - and were not disappointed!

A tight group of Killdeer arrived on the north side of Rt. 132 [near
former location of manure piles] at about the same time we did (1715).
Great lighting on them as they noisily bathed and preened, rested, and
then set off again within ~45 minutes.

The first 2 Nighthawks were overhead at 1810, not seriously foraging.
Another 10 seen ~30 min. later, upstream ~2 miles; one singly, two
groups of two foraging, then 5 feeding together. At 1900 we saw a loose
flock of 20+ foraging actively along the Connecticut River, just below
Pompy.

No swallows observed below I-91 bridge... gone south for school, no doubt.

Doug & Spencer Hardy, Norwich

Observation date: 8/28/07

Canada Goose 70 (approx. 1 mile upstream from Pompy)
Great Blue Heron 1 (sub-adult)
Green Heron 1
Killdeer 17
Common Nighthawk 32
Belted Kingfisher 1
