Ledyard birding was quite good yesterday morning and again this morning,
with shorebird numbers still relatively high for here, including ~6 each
Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers among 6 species. Yellow Warblers were
singing and plentiful, outnumbered only by yellow-rumps (~30 yesterday).
Both eastern and western Palm Warblers were there yesterday, providing a
nice comparison; only westerns today.

Beating the bushes for the Windsor County Quest today in Wilder, by the
river below Paradise Sports & Simon Pearce we had 2 difficult-to-find
sightings. One was a Red-bellied Woodpecker calling from a cavity, which
he sometimes withdrew into. Initially unable to locate the call, we
momentarily wondered if a playback device was hidden somewhere. The
other find was a group of 3 Pipits, feeding amidst stubble in a large
field and perfectly camouflaged. Although wary, they never moved quickly
or flew, so could easily have been missed.

Photos of the red-bellied and pipits can be seen at the following link.
Distance and quick-grab photography renders them less than great, but
illustrate a couple fun challenges.
