This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, March 6th,
2008.
A pair of BARROW'S GOLDENEYES was seen from the south side of Great Boar's
Head in Hampton on February 28th.
4 ICELAND GULLS a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and a NORTHERN PINTAIL were all
reported from the Rochester Wastewater Treatment Plant on March 4th. The
treatment plant is gated and the hours of operation are 7:30-3:00 on
weekdays. If you visit, please check in at the office and be out of the
plant by 2:45 so that plant personnel do not have to ask birders to leave.
Do not drive on the dikes and do not block the road. The Trails at Pickering
Ponds, located east of the plant, are not gated, and are always open during
daylight hours.
An ICELAND GULL was seen in Hampton Harbor on March 1st, and one was seen at
the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on March 2nd.
2 LAPLAND LONSPURS and 250 HORNED LARKS were seen on River Road in Walpole
on March 1st.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Jefferson on March 5th, and one was seen in
Durham on the 3rd, and one was seen in Portsmouth on the 3rd.
PINE GROSBEAK sightings during the past week came from Jefferson, Randolph,
Gorham, North Hampton, Wolfeboro, Etna, and Chatham.
COMMON REDPOLL sightings during the past week included several large flocks
from the Jefferson and Whitefield area.
BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included flocks in Ashland,
Holderness, Francestown, Marlborough, and Penacook.
6 AMERICAN WIGEON were seen on the Connecticut River in Monroe on March 4th,
and 3 were reported from Great Bay in Durham on the 3rd.
9 WOOD DUCKS, 27 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 6 HOODED MERGANSERS, and 7 COMMON
MERGANSERS were seen on Powwow Pond in Kingston on March 4th.
2 RING-NECKED DUCKS, a LESSER SCAUP, a BUFFLEHEAD, 5 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 90
COMMON GOLDENEYES, 56 HOODED MERGANSERS, 34 COMMON MERGANSERS, 5 MUTE SWANS,
and a BALD EAGLE were all seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March
1st.
2 KILLDEERS, one in Merrimack, and one in North Hampton, were seen on March
3rd.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen in Westmoreland on March 3rd.
TURKEY VULTURES were reported from Londonderry, Concord, Keene, North
Hampton, and Marlborough during the past week.
RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were reported from Weare, Walpole, Goffstown,
Plymouth, Hinsdale, Kensington, Greenland, Hanover Center, and Hampton
during the past week. A few COMMON GRACKLES were also seen.
During the past week there have been several reports of BARRED OWLS. Many of
these sightings are from during the day, and are probably migrants from
Canada moving south in search of food. Apparently the rodent population has
crashed where these birds normally live.
