This is the Vermont Rare Bird Alert for August 18, covering the period
August 11 - 18, 2008.  

 

The highlights of the week were the sightings of BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES off
of Grand Isle (2 on 8/17, 3 on 8/16, 3 on 8/15, 1 on 8/14, 4 on 8/13, 2 on
8/12 and 1 on 8/11) and 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at a pond a little east of
the intersection of Jersey Street and Goodrich Corners Road in Addison. 

 

On 8/13 two GREAT EGRETS were seen at Herrick's Cove and 1 along the Lemon
Fair River in West Cornwall.

 

Migrating shorebird sightings include:  BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (1 at Charlotte
Town Beach on 8/14), SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (2 at Charlotte Town Beach on
8/14), GREATER YELLOWLEGS (1 at Lefferts Pond on 8/13 and 1 at Delta Park on
8/12), SOLITARY SANDPIPER (1 in Norwich on 8/16), SANDERLING (5 at Charlotte
Town Beach on 8/14), SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (6 at Charlotte Town Beach on
8/14) and LEAST SANDPIPER (4 in Westfield and 3 at Charlotte Town Beach on
8/14).

 

Twenty-five CASPIAN TERNS were observed at Charlotte Town Beach on 8/14.

 

Three BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS were spotted in Hinesburg on 8/17 and one in
South Duxbury on 8/15.

 

Fifty BOBOLINKS were seen in Manchester on 8/16.

 

Four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were spotted in West Pawlet on 8/15.
