Subject: [UVB] shorebirds still around
To: [log in to unmask]

Having heard that Ed Hack saw some shorebirds at Pompy yesterday, Spencer
and I made a dash up tonight in a free 45-min block of time. The water was
down a bit as we arrived (17:25), always a good sign. The number of killdeer
was exciting, but then... a flock of peeps went up from the far corner. We
had considerable time to observe them through the scope as they gained
altitude and headed generally downstream, so Spencer was confident in
calling them Least Sandpipers. Estimating the number was tricky; we
discussed our individual estimates, consulted eBird's "Bird Counting 101",
and decided on 140. This is the highest reported count for Vermont this
year.
