Ed Hack and I looked for birds today along the Route 5 corridor in
eastern Windsor County, VT, from the town of Windsor north into
Norwich. Some highlights follow. Over 300 Canada Geese, 3 Cackling
Geese, and Ring-necked Ducks were at Lake Runnemede in Windsor. A
female scoter there was believed to be a Surf Scoter. A pair of
Buffleheads and three Hooded Mergansers in the Connecticut River were
seen from Kilowatt South Park in Wilder. Three American Coots were at
Lake Runnemede and another off Kendall Station Road in Norwich, a town
from which this species seems not to have been previously reported in
recent years. Three Ring-billed Gulls were standing on a gravel bar by
Lyman Point Park in White River Junction. Roughly 100 Mourning Doves
were around a farm field by the Windsor Industrial Park; an American
Tree Sparrow and a Song Sparrow were present nearby. A Yellow-shafted
Flicker was at Lake Runnemede. Surprisingly, no birds were noted at
Mill Pond in Windsor this morning.
