This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, February 27th, 
2017.



A TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE was discovered in Orford on February 23rd, where it 
was seen and photographed by several birders. It has not been relocated.



An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was reported from a birdfeeder located 
behind a house in Epping on February 12th, and it has been seen every day 
since then. It was last reported on the 26th.



A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at the Dillant-Hopkins Airport in Swanzey on 
February 20th.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along Warren Street in Plymouth on February 26th.



An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
February 25th.



15 BRANT and 2 RAZORBILLS were seen along the coast in Rye on February 25th.



2 GADWALL were seen at Jackson’s Landing in Durham on February 22nd.



A pair of NORTHERN SHOVELERS was seen on Great Bay, and 6 NORTHERN PINTAILS 
were seen in North Hampton, all on February 25th.



24 LESSER SCAUP were seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Plant on 
February 25th.



A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was seen at Chickering Farm in Westmoreland on February 
23rd.



A flock of 6 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen in Durham on February 21st, and 3 were 
seen in Rye on the 25th.



3 PINE GROSBEAKS were seen in Milan on February 25th, and 2 were seen in 
Errol on the 27th.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included: 60 in Sunapee on 
February 21st, 20 in Plymouth on the 23rd, 60 in Hanover on the 24th, 22 in 
New London on the 25th, 100 in Gorham on the 25th, and 1 in Errol on the 
27th.



An estimated 50 EVENING GROSBEAKS was seen visiting a birdfeeder at a 
private residence in Cornish on February 26th, and approximately 30 were 
seen between Gorham and Errol on the 25th.



A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen in Errol on February 25th.



An AMERICAN PIPIT was seen at Rye Harbor State Park on February 23rd,



3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen near Little Cherry Pond on February 
24th, and 2 more were seen at Mud Pond on the 25th, all at the Pondicherry 
National Wildlife Refuge in Jefferson.



2 GRAY JAYS were seen at the summit of Wildcat Mountain on February 24th.



TURKEY VULTURE sightings during the past week included 9 in Nashua, 10 in 
Durham, and 8 in Plymouth.



FISH CROW sightings during the past week included over 50 in Salem.



A GRAY CATBIRD was seen in Westmoreland on February 23rd.



Many early-returning migrants including COMMON GRACKLES, RED-WINGED 
BLACKBIRDS, BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS, BELTED KINGFISHERS, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, 
and KILLDEER have accompanied unseasonably warm weather during the past 
week.



Raptor activity is on the rise as many are courting and establishing 
territories. Species reported during the past week included: AMERICAN 
KESTREL, MERLIN, PEREGRINE FALCON, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, COOPER’S HAWK, 
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, and BALD EAGLE.
