This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Wednesday, May 25th, 
2011.



At least 3 MISSISSIPPI KITES were seen flying in Newmarket on May 21st. One 
of the best sites to watch from for these birds is in front of the 
elementary school located on South Main Street. MISSISSIPPI KITES nested in 
Newmarket last year.



A REEVE, a RED PHALAROPE, and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen in 
Charlestown, and a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 4 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 60 LEAST 
SANDPIPERS, 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 16 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were seen in 
Walpole, all on May 20th.



An AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER was seen in Hampton Harbor on May 21st.



A PARASITIC JAEGER, a LEAST TERN, 2 RAZORBILLS, 2 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, a 
possible ATLANTIC PUFFIN, and 30 unidentified PHALAROPES were seen from 
Little Boar's Head in North Hampton on May 22nd.



2 BLACK TERNS were reported from the Connecticut River area near Herrick's 
Cove on May 24th.



A LITTLE GULL was seen from Little Boar's Head in North Hampton on May 20th.



An ICELAND GULL was reported from the coast on May 21st.



A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, a NORTHERN SHOVELER, 20 BANK SWALLOWS, and 4 CLIFF 
SWALLOWS were seen at the Derry Wastewater Treatment Plant on May 21st. The 
plant is not open on weekends, and you should check into the main office if 
you visit on weekdays.



2 CLAPPER RAILS were seen in Hampton Marsh behind Little Jack's restaurant 
on Route 1A on May 21st and 22nd. One was heard again on May 25th.



2 LEAST BITTERNS were discovered at the marsh located off of Surrey Lane in 
Durham on May 15th and one was relocated on the 17th, and reported again on 
the 21st.



A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was reported from the Dillant-Hopkins Airport in 
Swanzey, and one was reported from McIntyre Road at the Pease International 
Tradeport, both on May 21st.



A RED KNOT was seen in Rye on May 21st.



18 BRANT, a ROSEATE TERN, 50 COMMON TERNS, 46 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 45 
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 2 RUDDY TURNSTONES, 148 SANDERLINGS, 178 SEMIPALMATED 
SANDPIPERS, 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 93 DUNLINS, and 30 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS 
were tallied in Hampton Harbor on May 25th.



A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 192 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 128 SEMIPALMATED 
SANDPIPERS, and 100 SANDERLINGS were reported from the coast on May 20th.



10 GLOSSY IBIS were seen from Odiorne Point State Park in Rye on May 22nd.



3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a DUNLIN were seen on Lake Opechee in Laconia 
on May 24th.



A BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was seen at Horseshoe Pond in Concord on May 19th, 
and 2 were seen on the Connecticut River in Hinsdale on the 21st.



A BLACK GUILLEMOT was seen on Hampton Harbor on May 20th.



40 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen at Rye Harbor on May 20th.



A COMMON TERN was seen on Wilson Pond in Swanzey on May 19th.



A HORNED GREBE, and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen on the Connecticut River 
in Hinsdale on May 23rd, and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was seen there on the 
21st.



WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were seen at a number of inland locations during the 
past week, including 240 seen over Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch on May 
21st, 40 on Squam Lake on the 22nd, 26 on Lake Massasecum in Bradford on the 
22nd, and smaller numbers from scattered locations on May 21st, 22nd, and 
23rd. Nearly 500 were tallied migrating along the coast on May 22nd.



A SORA was heard at Shelcamp Pond in Gilmanton, and one was heard at Odiorne 
Point State Park in Rye, both on May 22nd.



A group of 15 COMMON LOONS was seen on Lake Sunapee on May 22nd.



A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was heard in Hanover on May 24th.



2 PURPLE MARTINS were seen in Center Conway on May 21st, 1 was seen on 
Seabrook Beach on the 25th, and 3 were seen on Seabrook Beach on the 20th.



40 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from Concord, and 6 were reported from 
Keene, all on May 24th.



150 CHIMNEY SWIFTS were seen going to roost in a chimney in downtown 
Peterborough on May 19th.



At least 12 BANK SWALLOWS were reported from the junction of Routes 103 and 
114 in Bradford on May 20th. A CLIFF SWALLOW, 8 BARN SWALLOWS, and over 30 
TREE SWALLOWS were also present.



A FISH CROW was reported from Pittsfield on May 22nd.



WHIP-POOR-WILLS and ORCHARD ORIOLES were reported from several locations 
during the past week.



There were several reports of EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, 
WILLOW FLYCATCHER, ALDER FLYCATCHER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, 
BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, PHILADELPHIA 
VIREO, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH during the past week.



A birder on the Granite State whale-watch cruise out of Rye to Jeffrey's 
Ledge reported: 4 NORTHERN FULMARS, 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS, 166 WILSON'S 
STORM-PETRELS, 4 LEACH'S STORM-PETRELS, 54 NORTHERN GANNETS, 286 RED-NECKED 
PHALAROPES, a LITTLE GULL, and 21 COMMON TERNS.



An adult male PAINTED BUNTING was seen on Appledore Island, one of the Isles 
of Shoals located in Maine, on May 21st.



The PEREGRINE FALCONS that are nesting on the Brady-Sullivan building in 
Manchester now have hatched chicks. Check this link to webcam access:
