This is New Hampshire Audubon's Rare Bird Alert for Monday, March 23rd, 
2015.



A SNOWY OWL was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on March 16th.



A BLACK-HEADED GULL continues to be seen in Hampton and was last reported 
from the beach with a group of RING-BILLED GULLS on March 20th.



3 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES were seen on the Merrimack River in Manchester near 
the Texas Instruments building on March 23rd.



2 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES, and 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS were reported from the 
Connecticut River in Hinsdale on March 21st.



A male BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was seen on the Merrimack River from Lambert Park 
in Hooksett on March 18th.



A male CANVASBACK was seen on Silver Lake in Tilton on March 20th and 21st. 
It was seen from below Lochmere Dam, and also at Gardner’s Grove, and was 
often associating with COMMON GOLDENEYES.



A pair of GADWALL, and a RAZORBILL were seen along the coast in New Castle 
on March 21st, a NORTHERN PINTAIL was seen on the Squam River in Ashland on 
the 18th, and an AMERICAN WIGEON was seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment 
Facility on the 19th.



3 BRANT were seen along the coast in Rye on March 20th.



A GLAUCOUS GULL continues to be seen at the Seabrook side of Hampton Harbor 
and was last reported on March 19th.



2 ICELAND GULLS seen at the Exeter Wastewater Treatment Facility on March 
21st.



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Henniker on March 21st.



A PINE GROSBEAK was reported from River View Road in Newport on March 22nd.



4 RED CROSSBILLS were reported from near the Squam Lakes Natural Science 
Center in Holderness on March 21st.



BOHEMIAN WAXWING sightings during the past week included flocks of 37 in 
Nottingham on the 16th, 15 in Sunapee on the 17th, 40 in Ashland on the 
18th, 100 in Henniker on the 18th, 15 in Hudson on the 18th, 60 in Berlin on 
the 20th, 50 in Pittsfield on the 20th, 42 in Surry on the 20th, 8 in Durham 
on the 21st, 280 in Concord on the 21st, 15 in Nashua on the 21st, 12 in 
Hollis on the 21st, 85 in Brookline on the 21st, 125 in Laconia on the 21st, 
50 in Somersworth on the 21st, 22 in Sandwich on the 22nd, and 30 in Milford 
on the 22nd. These flocks were seen mainly foraging on ornamental fruit 
tress, or resting nearby. As spring approaches, they may not be around much 
longer!



A flock of 35 COMMON REDPOLLS was seen in Franconia, and a flock of 5 was 
seen in Lyme, all on March 20th.



Hikers in Crawford Notch in the White Mountains reported a flock of 20 
COMMON REDPOLLS and 3 GRAY JAYS from Mount Jackson, and 4 GRAY JAYS from 
Mount Webster. Also seen was an out-of-place GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL flying 
by.



2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 14 HORNED LARKS were reported from the Agway 
parking lot in Walpole, and a flock of 8 HORNED LARKS was seen along Trask 
Brook Road in Sunapee, all on March 21st.



A flock of 65 SNOW BUNTINGS was seen at Hampton Beach State Park on March 
21st.



4 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen in Greenland on March 21st.



A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was reported from Brookline on March 16th, 1 was 
reported from Orford on the 17th, and 2 were reported from Nottingham on the 
20th.



An AMERICAN KESTREL was seen at the landfill in West Lebanon on March 21st.



A MERLIN was seen in Nashua on March 17th, 1 was seen at Squam Lake on the 
20th, and 1 was seen in Salem on the 23rd.



A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen in Portsmouth on March 23rd, and 1 was seen in 
Concord on the 22nd.



2 TREE SWALLOWS were seen in Hinsdale on March 21st.



A HERMIT THRUSH was seen in Ashland on March 22nd.



There were scattered reports of small numbers of early returning migrants 
during the past week, including: RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES, 
KILLDEER, GREAT BLUE HERONS, TURKEY VULTURES, RING-NECKED DUCKS, HOODED 
MERGANSERS, and WOOD DUCKS.
