Ed Hack and I looked for birds in Norwich earlier today. Coverage was
primarily along the Connecticut and Ompompanoosuc Rivers. Here are
some highlights.

Canada Geese (11) were at Foley Park but not elsewhere along our route.

Wood Ducks were found in two places along the Connecticut River.

Mallards were at several locations but a flock of roughly 40 near
Kendal Station Road was the most concentrated group. Decoys marked to
resemble Mallards were in use for hunting near Pompy Farms.

Hooded Mergansers were found in three locations.

Wild Turkeys (6) were along Route 5 North.

A Double-crested Cormorant was swimming and diving near Pompy Farms.

A flying Great Blue Heron was seen from Foley Park.

Soaring Red-tailed Hawks (2, both mature) were along Campbell Flats
road.

A Belted Kingfisher was hovering and diving at Pompy.

American Robins were widespread, mainly in low numbers.

Two Hermit Thrushes together provided nice views along Kendal Station
Road.

Four Yellow-rumped Warblers in a loose flock were foraging in birches
along Kendal Station Road.

A Savannah Sparrow was near Pompy Farms. Four White-crowned Sparrows
were along Kendal Station Road. Other emberizine species seen today
included Chipping Sparrow, Song Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, and
Dark-eyed Juncos.

Four Evening Grosbeaks were in the backyard in Norwich village.
