Sorry I didn't see the OP to this thread, but as suggested from others,
make the sender either save the file as an Excel or 'tab-separated' text
file, - then you can open either of these files in both OpenOffice,
NeoOffice or MSOffice 2004. - Both OpenOffice and NeoOffice are freeware....

Else I'd say that the best would be to try to find a used copy of
Filemaker 7.x or later. Sometimes both ver. 7.x and 8.x are sold as low
as to around $50USd on eBay and similar auction sites. Both versions
will also work on SnowLeopard. Min. requirement is for FMP 7.x OS X
10.4.6 and the same with FMP 8.x, but 10.4.11 or higher is recommended.

On the Microsoft sites there used to be a bplu-in for the Os X ver. of
FMP 6.x+ for direct import and opening of Access files. - Also the
Filemaker developers have eitherwhere a plug-in, so FMP bases can be
opened directly in Access on Windows computers.

Once you've gotten the Filemaker Pro, you indeed will be using it more
and more. The FMP is one of my 'must have' applications and I bought my
first - the ver. 2.1 way back in 1994 for my old laptop - a PowerBook
165, which btw. still is working like new..-) - And now I'm at FMP 10.x
Advanced, and I use it nearly daily. But I agree that if it's a one-time
'happening' the $349USd is far too much...

Cheers, Erik Richard
