What you suggest here is the way to go when you are searching for a certain version of an application X and want to exclude other versions from that search. Example: You want to look for X.app v. 6. Then you can use as a search criterium ">5" and "<7" which will find v. 6.

What I wanted to do is to search for *all* X.app and then sort the results according to the version number. This was not possible with Spotlight because there was no version column provided in the Spotlight window containing the results. My ultimate purpose was to look for old and outdated versions in order to be able to delete them in one go. You see Ben, I'm following your advice and trying to reduce the garbage. :-)

By the way, Kino provided the solution with Secrets PrefPane from
