This can be done in the following way:

1) Remove the key combination Command+D from the Finder command "Duplicate". You do that by going to the System Preferences panel. You will have to replace it by another key combination (I did it with Control+D) because leaving it blank isn't possible.

2) Download "Spark" which is a free Hotkey shortcuts manager from here:

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/14352/spark

Don't confuse it with Spark, the Task management application of the same name!!!!!!!

3) In Spark you now define a hotkey Command+D for the folder "Desktop" (that folder is in Users > You > Desktop).


From now on, every time you press Command+D the Desktop will be opened and files will not be duplicated anymore when you use this key combination.
