A small irony. I did away with little white cards in 2001, when we got
computers. I replaced it with a simple tally of equipment use, striving to see
that most of the positions have the same equipment and software.

But many times, including yesterday, I have felt that nothing works like a
little white card. One of my student assistants took on the project (for a
course), last Fall, of developing a database that would do part of what the
little white card did, but on the one hand she failed and on the other the cards
worked better because it was just a more concrete transaction between the lab
assistant and the student, and really less tedious than having the lab assistant
enter the info on a computer.

We are still in the dark ages, and would like to modernize without
losing some of our reporting capabilities. When clients come to our
center, we sign them in on cards, indicating what they are doing
(activity), what media they are using, and what equipment we've assigned
them to use. Imagine! But different positions in the MIMC have
different software. Furthermore, we let individuals or small groups
work in here, even when classes are present, as long as there is room.

I would like to update this practice to a simple ID scan system. We can
use the library bar codes which are already on their ID's. Any
recommendations for software that we could use in conjunction with this?
