My apologies... I didn't bother to look at the Apple site. The new new iPod 2nd
generation handles sound input with a $79 gadget. The first genration does not.
This is what Apple says:

"The remote and mic are supported only by iPod nano (4th generation), iPod
classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation). Audio is supported by all iPod
models."
