We do little enough of this that we don't have a great system for it. We may be
moving our lab machines to the Active Directory soon so then it may be easier.
For now, we just have a testing profile that has no icons for anything other
than Audacity and we load the test file ahead of time. We then gather the
student responses either on flash drives or by mapping the hard drives from one
machine and gathering them all that way. We burn them to CDs that the
instructors can take home with them. There are surely much better ways but we
haven't had the necessity to invent (or find) them.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for the tip on Audacity.

I tried the multi-track in Audacity and it works great.  I have been pondering a
method for storing and delivering the testing source files to students, then
storing and delivering or just providing access to the student recordings for
faculty.  I don't want to take up your time, but could you give me an idea of
how your facility manages the file input/output?  I am thinking I am going to
need some sort of content (database?) management system layered over a basic
network file share.  Have you heard of any inexpensive product that might help? 
We don't use any form of lab management software or net-classroom system.  Looks
like I might need to check those out if the faculty keep thinking up more
complex data-need scenarios.

We use Audacity to administer oral tests. You can record the questions and then
insert beeps and silences. Then open the recording in Audacity and click Record
to start a second track. At the end, you can keep both tracks or keep only the
students' answers, whichever you prefer. It's free and pretty reliable. I'd say
we have less than a 1% failure rate (where Audacity crashes and the recording
gets lost and the student has to redo it).
