With the attendance component that my system has, teachers select one
of their courses, that does a search in the database and displays a
list of the students with the word "Absent" as a hotlink next to
their name. By clicking on "Absent" next to a student's name, that
person is recorded as absent and they are sent an official looking
message to their email account. This email notification has resulted
in students hunting down their instructors and profusely apologizing
for missing class. Needless to say, you see their bright and shining
faces the next day. This has produced some chuckles among TAs and
faculty.
The equipment check-out system performs the same function by sending
reminders to faculty that they need to return equipment. This,
however, does not produce quite as many chuckles for some reason :-)
