Janice,

I think one of the issues here is how you use your lab.

If it is used primarily as a venue for classes with teacher and student
interaction then some low clear divider may be a good idea.  If you
have students conversing with each other, you want them to be able to
see their partner.

If on the other hand, your lab is primarily a library lab, you may want
to choose furniture where they can cloister themselves to get their
work done. I have a library lab and have chosen Synsor carrels to
divide the space.  http://www.macalester.edu/hrc/tour.html is a QT
panorama of my space.  I have added a lounge area at the far end of the
room with couches, comfortable chairs, and tables for students to work,
read, or converse.
