I have the manual for the AG-W1. It is not a very intuitive
interface, so there is a chance that changing a few settings will
make the difference for you. To quote the manual (p 16):

What they mean by the TV System Switch is the pair of switches (!) on
the front of the machine, near the center, under the tape slot and
numerical display. The words "TV System" appear above the switches.
For the regular PAL VHS - NTSC VHS conversions, which you mention
that you do all the time, these two switches don't ever have to be
moved. However, when you input a signal via Inputs 1 or 2 (the RCA
connectors on the front and back of the AG-W1), you must set these
switches properly. My first guess is that this is the problem.
Set the left TV System Switch to PAL and the right one to whatever
flavor of PAL is appropriate for each of your tapes. When in doubt,
I start with M-PAL for Brazil and PAL for everything else. A short
recording test will tell you if you got it right.
Then you need to press the System Selector Button for NTSC. This is
the second button from the left on the fold-down panel at the front
of the machine (between the "Through" and "PAL" buttons). The System
Selector Button defines what format the copy will be in, when you are
recording onto a blank cassette inside the AG-W1. It also defines
the format of the output signal, which I usually have plugged into my
monitor. Probably, you already had this set correctly.
Finally, hit play on the U-matic VCR and record on the AG-W1. Record
a few seconds, and check the result to see if it is working.
If this doesn't work, write me off-list, and I will look deeper into
the manual.
