The Science of Learning

How do we learn and where do we learn best? Can we develop new learning styles, or is our learning fixed? The topic of this week's Science Pub kicks off the 2018-19 season with the perennial question: Can you teach an old dog new tricks (and if so, how?). We are bringing together a panel of education practitioners grounded in outdoor learning, machine learning, and neuroscience. You won't want to miss it, and you might learn something new!

Thursday, October 25 6pm
Salt hill pub, Lebanon.

Discussion Leaders:

Marc Chabot:
Thetford Academy’s Dean of Academics and also teaches chemistry, physics, robotics, and computer science. Prior to joining TA in 1996, he taught chemistry and physics in two different high schools, and computer science at the University of New Hampshire.

Marc has also worked as a software engineer in both research and business, and spent a year working on an education research project with his former professor, the late Faith Dunne, PhD, mother of Vermont politician Matt Dunne. He has an AB from Dartmouth College in chemistry modified with education, plus an MS in computer science from University of New Hampshire. He earned his principal licensure from the Upper Valley Educators Institute.

David Kraemer
Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Dartmouth College.
Research in the Kraemer Lab is focused on the neural and behavioral correlates of learning and complex cognition, with a particular focus on individual differences. Key questions include, "How does the information we receive from our senses form lasting conceptual representations in the brain?" and, "How does this process vary for different individuals?" as well as, "What behaviors, strategies, and conditions allow for successful learning of complex concepts?"

Cindy Perry
Cindy Perry, M.Ed: In 1994. Owner and director of Raven's Wood Outdoor School for Renegades, Cindy became a teacher because she always hated school. She believes learning takes place through play, hands-on activities, and making real-life connections. Cindy draws from her experiences raising two children, teaching for 22 years in Montessori, public, private, and community schools, and One Planet Afterschool and Summer Camp Programs Site Director in Tunbridge and Sharon. Cindy has gained the knowledge and experience to 'pass it on' via Raven's Wood Outdoor School for Renegades.
