Excellent, thanks Bruce.

I think I have it down to one network card and one possible wire
replacement. I appreciate the input and the help.

Subject: Re: Communication with Host Lost...

Hi Len,

Long term, please go with FileMaker server, for all of the reasons already
listed. Ok that out of the way, I would suspect a hardware or cable issue.

If you can take a look at the router logs to see if it shows loss of
connection to one of your computers. You would see indications that it is
frequently assigning an address to one of them.

If there has been any work done in the office lately that might have come
into contact with one of your network cables. If you have access to the
cables, look for kinks or cuts in the outer casing.

Check the connectors on the cables. If the little tab that holds the
connector in has broken off replace the cable.

Last make sure the cables are plugged in all the way. I have seen were the
computer was moved and the cable was no longer properly seated.

From here it gets a bit more expensive....

It is possible that the network card is going bad in one of the computers.
These days the cards are frequently built in to the mother board. That
stated, you should be able to get one that plugs in to the mother board. Get
one and install it in one of the computers. If the you loose connection
again, swap it to the other computer. If one of the Network adapters is bad,
this will resolve the problem and let you know which one.

If your switches are 10 years old, consider getting new ones. I had a
similar issue a number of years ago when setting up a new office for the
company I worked for. In this case it was a large switch. Everything would
work great for 10 minutes to an hour. Then one or more computers would show
network errors and close all external connections. Reboot the computer it
would get a new address and be fine until the next glitch.
Finally tracked it down to this one switch. The catch... we had several
hundred computers and several switches. It took a while to find the right
one.

Hope this is helpful.
Best of luck.
