Hear ya, there. The doctors that I have worked with and medical solutions that I have developed so far have skirted the Medicare, FDA and other requirements. For now. As long as they are HIPAA compliant we can squeak by. Not sure how long that will last.

In one solution we avoid certification requirements because the master data store is paper and the solution is only for generating and processing said paper. As long as the final data store is not electronic we don’t need certification. Like I said, “for now.”

I talked with a doctor and researcher that was serious about turning her FileMaker-based EMR into a commercial product a few years ago, but I bet she has been bullied into submission by now.

::-(

“Efficient patient care?” Did anyone actually believe such a thing would exist after the government take-over? There are a lot fewer believers around now, I’ll bet...

They wanted $35000 just to look at my solution, and of course it would not have met many of their certification requirements that are totally divorced from good patient care and physician efficiency. The fact that currently over 80% of doctors are desperately unhappy with their EMRs is testimony to the poor design of government certified EMRs. They are designed to satisfy govt requirements for so called meaningful use, not for efficient patient care.

My current job doesn't involve any FileMaker Pro (lots of Crystal Reports & Excel, with a bit of Tableau visualization use thrown in for spice) and I'm now several versions behind -- though not nearly as many versions as in Sheila's post. I get together when I can with folks from the Twin Cities FMPro user group; very nice people.
