Hi '17s (and members of other classes),

If you like learning new things and meeting other people who like learning new things, you should join the Dartmouth quizbowl team! Quizbowl is a fun, competitive game based on academic knowledge of topics like literature, history, science and the arts. No matter what you're interested in, you can impress others with your knowledge and discover some cool new stuff as well.

The quizbowl team holds practices Monday 7-10 PM in Sarner 69 and Tuesday-Thursday 7-10 PM in Thornton 107. Practices are informal and open to anyone who's interested, so you can come and go whenever it's convenient for you. Coming to practice is also an opportunity to try out a new social space and connect with other Dartmouth students who share your interests. Our first practice will be tomorrow (Monday, September 16) in Thornton 107 (not Sarner like subsequent Mondays).

Every term, we send several teams to compete at tournaments at other schools. Anyone who wants to come is eligible to play regardless of skill level. This term we'll be going to Harvard and Brown, among other schools.

If you have any questions or you'd like to sign up for our blitz list, you can blitz the College Bowl account at [log in to unmask]

Here are a couple example questions to give you an idea what quizbowl is like. The object is to buzz with the correct answer before the other team.

In one of this man’s works, The King of Navarre and his three friends vow to focus on their studies instead of on women. Balthasar sings “Hey nonny, nonny” for Don Pedro, and Borachio makes Claudio believe that Hero is unfaithful to him in a work by this author, who created the slow-witted Sir Andrew Aguecheek in a play in which Olivia falls in love with Cesario, who is really Viola in disguise. For 10 points, name this Elizabethan playwright of Love’s Labour’s Lost, Much Ado about Nothing, and Twelfth Night.
ANSWER: William Shakespeare

This man, along with his future son-in-law Henry Ireton, argued for the grandees at the Putney Debates. After his return from military campaigns against the Engagers in Scotland, he personally established the Barebone’s Parliament after he disbanded the Rump Parliament. He saw early military success as a cavalry commander at Marston Moor and later at Naseby as a leader of the New Model Army. For 10 points, the Instrument of Government established the power of what Lord Protector who signed the death warrant of King Charles I?
ANSWER: Oliver Cromwell
