The Dartmouth Math Society will be having its first meeting tomorrow (Monday) in Kemeny 105.

There will be PIZZA served at 6:30 PM followed by a talk by Professor Vladimir Chernov. The talk will be accessible to first-year students:

"Talk Title: 'Causality and causally simple spacetimes'
Speaker: Vladimir Chernov, Mathematics Department

Abstract: Given two points x,y in a spacetime we say that y is in the causal future of x, if it is possible to get from x to y without exceeding the speed of light.
The situation where y is in the causal future of x, and z is in the causal future of y, corresponds to time travel. This leads to various philosophical paradoxes.
We discuss various conditions one can impose on the causality relation (for example prohibiting time travel) and give examples of spacetimes satisfying them.
In the end of the talk we discuss ``causally simple'' spacetimes, where one may hope to reconstruct causal relation between x and y from the set of points where the points
are visible in the universe at any given moment of time."
