MINIVERSITY CLASSES SPRING 2011

LANGUAGE CLASSES

*AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE
Mondays and Fridays (subject to change) 3:00-4:00pm, Collis 218 (Mon) and Collis 212 (Fri)
6 sessions, $45 per person
Instructor: Renee Scott
Limit: 12 students
Students will learn the basics of American Sign Language (alphabet, elementary words and phrases, sentence structure). The course aims to have every student conversationally functional by the end of the course.

*BEGINNER CONVERSATIONAL ARABIC
Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm, Collis 218
6 sessions, $30 per person
Instructor: Hana (Heba) Issa
Limit: 12 students
Students will learn the Arabic alphabet as well as begin to learn to read and write Arabic. An emphasis on conversational Levantine Arabic will be used to learn basic phrases, meetings, greetings, colors, asking for directions and other parts of beginner conversation.

*KOREAN LANGUAGE
Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm, Collis 212
6 sessions, $30 per person
Instructor: Ellian Choi (Moon Young Choi)
Limit: 20 students
This class is a Korean Language course for the students with no previous experience in the language. The course will focus mainly on basic conversational skills, and also briefly touch on the basics of writing and grammar structure. We will talk about greetings and introductions, describing, preferences, the alphabet, direction, and purchasing.

*GENTLE INTRODUCTION TO GERMAN (and to the people who speak it)
Thursdays 8:00-10:00pm, Silsby 113
8 sessions, $55 per person
Instructor: Alexander Matthey
Limit: 12 students
This German language and culture course is designed for beginners and will result in a measurable improvement in German for participants in the class. Course material includes basic pronunciation training, basic grammar and vocabulary building, easy conversation, and an introduction to German culture.


COOKING CLASSES

*MIDDLE EASTERN COOKING
Thursdays 6:00-8:00pm, Brace Commons Kitchen (East Wheelock)
6 sessions, $60 per person
Instructor: Hana (Heba) Issa
Limit: 15 students
Use a hands on approach to learn how to cook and bake the delicacies of the North African and Middle Eastern nations. Dishes include Kafta bi tahini, stuffed grape leaves, kusa mahshi, tabboule and desserts. Taste the revolution!

*PIES FROM SCRATCH
Mondays 7:45-9:45pm, Brace Commons Kitchen (East Wheelock)
6 sessions, $55 per person
Instructor: Phoebe Palmer
Limit: 12 students
Want to learn to make your own pumpkin, apple, or cherry pie? What about strawberry rhubarb or key lime? We'll learn to make these and more, covering classic pies to the most unusual. The class will cover about 12 different kinds of pies, with different types of crusts as well as fillings. Class members will have input on what types these will be.

*POSTMODERN THAI COOKING
Tuesdays 6:00-8:00pm, Brace Commons Kitchen (East Wheelock)
6 sessions, $60 per person

Limit: 12 students
In this class we will learn how to cook a variety of traditional and contemporary Thai dishes. Additionally, we will have discussions about postmodern ideas.

* WINE DISCOVERY
Wednesdays 7-9pm, Collis 101
6 sessions, $80 per person  (No class May 4th)

Limit: 25 people
We will learn to really enjoy wine by becoming familiar with its components from farm to hype, major viticultural techniques, grape varieties, deciphering labels, and sensory evaluation. *Must be 21 or older to enroll.  ID required to register. First session mandatory.  


NEW SKILLS

*CONSULTING INTERVIEW PREPARATION
Tuesdays 7:00-9:00pm, Carson L01
6 sessions + 1 one-on-one hour per student, $50 per person (price subject to change)
Instructor: Eric Hsu
Limit: 30 students
This course will prepare students for consulting interviews by going through different market sizing techniques, frameworks, and case solving approaches. This course will address the differences between consulting and finance, and the distinguishing features of major consulting firms. Classroom concepts are reinforced with two one-on-one mock case sessions [30 min each]. By the end of the course, students will have developed a better understanding of the qualities of a good company and use this knowledge to develop relevant and precise frameworks/approaches.

*FINANCIAL MODELING FOR INVESTMENT BANKING

This course cover the major financial modeling concepts used in investment banking. The course emphasizes use of Microsoft Excel along with a theoretical overview of the major valuation techniques. Students will learn corporate valuation techniques such as Comparable Companies, Discounted Cash Flows, and Leveraged Buyouts, and learn how to build their own Excel models in the context of these valuation techniques. It is directly relevant to students who will be doing investment-banking internships this summer and for students who have a strong interest in finance as a career.

*INTRODUCTION TO FLY FISHING
Thursdays 4:00-6:00pm, Collis 218 and the BEMA

Instructor: Joseph Garagliano
Limit: 10 students
In this class, we'll learn the basics of fly fishing. This course is designed to cover the basics of casting, entomology, reading water, knots, and selecting and preparing
equipment. Learn how to determine what fly to choose, how to present it like the natural, and how to catch fish using a fly rod. We assume that you have had little or no exposure to fly fishing, and our goal is to provide you with the foundation from which to build a lasting relationship with the sport. Fishing equipment can be rented from Hanover Outdoors for less than $15.

*BEGINNING MAGIC
Tuesdays 6:00-7:30pm, Silsby 113

This is an introduction to beginner magic, including magic effects, basic sleight of hand and an introduction into performance style.

*STARCRAFT 2
Thursdays 8:00-9:30pm, Collis 218

Are you a cyber athlete?  Want to be?  In this Starcraft II class, students will be watching professional games, analyzing replays, and playing matches against players at or above their level.  The purpose of this course is to improve your Starcraft II skills, and learn how to be a better RTS gamer in general.  Each class will be around 1.5 hours.  For the last class, a professional Starcraft 2 player (possibly iNcontrol, CatZ, or Drewbie) will come teach the students directly.

*HENNA FOR BEGINNERS
Wednesdays 4:00-5:15pm, Collis 219

Ever wanted to try your hand at creating henna tattoos? Maybe you've thought about getting a tattoo but you're afraid of commitment? Henna has been around since the Ancient Egyptians, and it's a fun, temporary and 100% natural way to decorate your body. This class will teach you the basics of mixing and applying henna, as well as how to do traditional and contemporary designs. You'll have lots of practice, and learn how to break down a design on paper and rebuild it on skin without using a transfer. No artistic experience is necessary.

*FOUNDATIONS OF YOGA

This course will help you stay healthy, happy and stress-free this spring!  We'll cover the basics of yoga in a variety of areas, including physical practice and breath control, as well as meditation, ethics and yogic philosophy.  The course is suitable for students brand-new to yoga and for those with a higher level of experience.  Come honor your body and celebrate spring in a comfortable, judgment-free space. Mats will be provided.

Looking for an extra workout to add to the week? Desire a dancer's lean muscles and flexibility? Take Dance Stretch and Conditioning! We'll improve overall muscle strength and flexibility in a safe, individual manner. This workout will be beneficial for both dancers and non-dancers. No dance experience necessary!

*INTRODUCTION TO PERSIAN DANCE

This class is an introduction to Iranian/Persian dancing today, understanding and feeling the music and movements.

*WUSHU (CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS)

Wushu, also known as Kung Fu, or Chinese Martial Arts, is a traditional part of Chinese culture dating back to 3000 BC. It consists of a variety of fighting styles developed over the centuries and emphasizes physical, metal, and spiritual balance. Through the practice of Wushu, one learns self-defense and awareness of his/her surroundings, as well as ways to control stress.

MUSIC CLASSES

*LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR!
Tuesdays 5:00-6:00pm, Collis 101

Instructor: Kerry Rosenthal
Limit: 10 students
Join guitar expert Kerry Rosenthal of the Kerry Rose Band and have fun learning to play solid guitar so that you can play and sing songs you like! We will use a song-based method, focusing on learning chords and strumming/picking patterns that work with the songs we choose.  Course is meant for beginners with little or no experience - the only requirement is that you have a guitar to use for the class. You can rent a good guitar for a reasonable price at Hanover Strings.

*MASHUPS, REMIXES, AND DIGITAL DJing WITH ABLETON LIVE

Ever wanted to know what it takes to produce beats like Deadmau5 and David Guetta or make mashups like Super Mash Bros?  Or better yet: once you've produced your own new music, have you ever wanted to know how to DJ digitally?  With the advent of digital music technologies and software such as Ableton, electronic music production and live digital performance have exploded onto the popular music scene.  With some instruction and an interest in music, nearly anyone could be the next DJ Girl Talk or Tiesto.  Find out how!
Note: For students who have taken Music 008 or Music 009, this course does not cover the same material as presented in those classes.  Experience from Music 8 or Music 9 will be helpful, but certainly not required!

Mondays 7-8 or 8-9 (choose one time slot)

Learn the basics of DJing equipment, how to beatmatch, how to work effects into sets, and other general DJing rules of thumb. (This course is a hands-on DJing course)
