Envisioning Jerusalem: Prints from Dürer to Rembrandt


Medieval maps placed Jerusalem at the center of the world; with its fundamental importance to the Old and New Testaments, the holy city has held sacred and secular significance for centuries. After the invention of the printing press in the fifteenth century, a vast market emerged for descriptions and representations recording the pilgrimage experience. This collection presents imaginary and idealized depictions of Jerusalem by a variety of European artists, creating legendary and grand renderings of the holy city.
