FUNDING, FUNDING, FUNDING
ESD would like to invite you to apply for a grant to fund an environmentally
focused project, event, purchase or trip. Think of it as the green Schlitz. Some
suggestions we've heard of as good project ideas are environmentally friendly
climbing ropes, bamboo t-shirts, or organic food for trips. In these cases, ESD
would fund the cost difference between the normal and improved product.

Here is what you should include in your application:
Description of project/event, etc - What is your idea? When will you start?
Breakdown of expenses - How will the money be spent?
Environmental benefits - Why is this an effective use of funds? How does it
improve sustainable practices in the DOC or at Dartmouth?

Applications do not have to be very long, but your idea should be clearly
planned out.

DUE DATE: Monday, November 15th
If you have any questions or would like to be more involved in the environmental
studies division of the DOC, blitz ESD or Ben Hughey

VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER
The State Street School in Windsor, VT has a great local food partnership with
the Windsor Correctional Facility. The prison grows an abundance of vegetables
for use at their facility and also for use at the State Street School. The school
then collects all food waste from the cafeteria and takes it back to the prison
for composting (the school site is contaminated, so they cannot process their
compost at their location).

The problem is, young students don't know enough about composting to sort their
food waste, recyclables, etc. and there are not enough staff members to help the
students sort their waste after they eat. What the school really needs are compost
buddies/educators to teach the kids at lunch where to put what waste (signs on
bins can only do so much). Bob Cerra, the director of food services, is really
passionate about local agriculture and wants to make sure the systems they have
in place can really close the loop- farm to plate and back to farm as compost.
The lunch hours are about from 11am-1pm Monday through Friday. Help even one
day a week would make a huge difference!
