Dr. Spyer will discuss the emergence of a new and ambitious elite within Iran,  
its regional ambitions, and its use of Islamist proxies as an instrument of policy.  
What is the role of Israel in Iranian regional strategy? How will the emergence  
of a conflict between thw two affect the Middle East? What is the strategic picture  
in the region due to the clash between Iran and its allies and United States and  
its allies? What are the implications of the recent events in the Arabic speaking  
countries--who has gained and who has lost?

Dr. Spyer is the author of The Transforming Fire:
the Rise of the Israel-Islamist Conflict (Continuum, 2011). His
articles have apeared in the Guardian, Times of London, the
Australian, Toronto Globe and Mail, Haaretz, Israel affairs, British
Journal of Middle East Studies and many other publications.  He is a
regular regional analyst on Israel Channel 1 News in English and has
also appeared on CNN, BBC, al-Jazeera, Sky News and other outlets.  His main areas  
of research interest are Lebanon, Syria and Israeli
regional strategy.

He has served as a special advisor on international affairs to Israeli Cabinet  
members and was an employee of the Israel Prime Minister's Office between 1996  
and 2000. He has also served in the Israel Defense Forces and had fought in the  
Second Lebanon War in 2006.
